Phuket is an interesting place to explore and getting around is easy with a huge choice of transportation options to choose between, including but not limited to the following:

  • Songthaew

  • Tuk-tuk

  • Taxi

  • Bus

Songthaew

A songthaew (Thai for two seats) is a vehicle that has two long bench-style seats that can comfortable sit around five people along each. Peak travel periods and popular routes will see many more people piled onto songthaews but journeys are cheaper than in a tuk-tuk or taxi although routes can be restrictive as they are often pre-set.

Tuk-Tuk

The ever-present tuk-tuk is a Thailand institution. They hold a high novelty value with tourists and although noisy, they are a hugely popular and easy way to get around. Prices are around the same as a taxi and should always be bartered in a polite manner before beginning the journey.

Taxi

taxis are prevalent in Phuket and they are often the easiest way to get around. Many drivers offer their services per trip, for half days and for full days, which is perfect for anyone looking to avoid taking a busy guided tour of the sights and attractions. Negotiating prices for taxi journeys must always be done before starting the journey and it is important to smile and be polite during the process. Patong is home to many designated taxi ranks and taxis can also be pre-booked.

Buses

Local buses are the single cheapest form of transport but you get what you pay for! They are often hot and busy but they are useful for completing short journeys along the main beachfront areas and to and from your Phuket hotel.

There are other options for getting around Phuket with guided mini bus tours, VIP buses, motorbikes for hire and rental cars all available. The roads on the island can be dangerous and a car is a far safer choice than a motorbike if you wish to discover the island independently. Please abide by local safety laws and note that helmets must be worn at all times and drink driving is prohibited.

For further information on organising public or private transport, please contact Citrus Heights Patong and we will be happy to answer any questions.
